Python 2 reached end of life on January 1, 2020, with the final release (2.7.18) following in April 2020; major libraries dropped Python 2 support, breaking creative toolchains in VFX, game development, and generative art that depended on Python 2 syntax and libraries.

Python 2 was officially sunset on January 1, 2020, after over a decade of overlap with Python 3 (released in 2008). The final release, Python 2.7.18, shipped on April 20, 2020.

What changed

The end-of-life itself was a policy change, but the real breakage came from the ecosystem. NumPy, TensorFlow, Matplotlib, scikit-learn, Requests, and hundreds of other libraries dropped Python 2 support in coordinated fashion. pip eventually stopped defaulting to Python 2-compatible package versions. New library releases became Python 3-only.

For the creative and art world, the impact was felt across several domains:

VFX and motion graphics: Major applications like Autodesk Maya, SideFX Houdini, and The Foundry Nuke had embedded Python 2 runtimes for scripting and plugin development. Studios had years of Python 2 pipeline scripts. Maya did not ship with Python 3 support until Maya 2022 (released March 2021), meaning the entire VFX industry was running an unsupported Python runtime for over a year after EOL.

Generative art and creative coding: Python-based generative art scripts, many shared on GitHub or personal blogs as educational examples, used Python 2 print statements, xrange, and other syntax incompatible with Python 3. These scripts silently fail when run with a modern Python interpreter.

Game development: Older versions of Ren’Py (visual novel engine), Pygame projects, and Blender scripts written for Blender 2.7x (which used Python 3 but whose community had many Python 2 holdouts in tutorials) were affected by the ecosystem shift.

Notes

Python 2’s EOL was announced further in advance than almost any other deprecation in software history — the original target was 2015, extended to 2020. Despite this, the creative tools world lagged significantly behind, partly because embedded Python runtimes in commercial applications were outside individual artists’ control.
