Net art / mobile media performance
neXtOper@1.01 for cell.phones is part of Sergio Maltagliati’s broader neXtOper@ / Oper@_PiXeL project (2001–2003), which reinterpreted opera through early mobile media systems and networked visual communication. The work distributed operatic material as mobile phone ringtones, logos, icons, banners, ASCII art and digital images, fragmenting the opera form into networked audiovisual signs at the transition between early net art and emerging mobile media culture.
The project belongs to the historical continuity connecting Pietro Grossi’s experimental research with later internet-based and generative audiovisual systems developed by Maltagliati.
Exhibition contexts include Galerie De Meerse (Amsterdam) and the Presidenza del Consiglio Comunale — Sala di Lorenzo at Palazzo Vecchio, Florence.
